CYSTERLY SIS!

Polycystic ovary syndrome

  • PCOD is the former term for PCOS (😆 so there's no the difference)
  • Stein and Leventhal were considered to be the principal investigators for studies on the ovaries of amenorrhoeic females. By the mid- 1950s, this condition was named as Stein-Leventhal syndrome
  • Later through the 1970s and mid-1980s, it was known as polycystic disease (PCOD) or polycystic syndrome (PCOS). It was only in the early 90s that the formal diagnostic criteria for  PCOS were introduced by National Institute of Health (NIH)
  • Over the past years, there were several studies which were conducted to understand the nature of this disorder
  •  This endocrine disorder has the ability to rapidly gain epidemic proportions, leading to a health-care-related economic burden among women of the reproductive age group

💁what ???

  • is an endocrine disorder
  • It has psychological and metabolic components as well

  • its manageable but not curable

💁why???

  • The exact cause is still unresolved
  • Functional derangement of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis in females, which is associated with anovulation results in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • significant evidence demonstrating that excess androgen, genetic, insulin resistance, and the associated hyperinsulinemia can induce PCOS
  •  action of insulin is impaired due to androgen excess
  • factors like stress, unhealthy eating, and a sedentary lifestyle worsen the condition
